The Rigellians aren’t really slugs. They are reptilian. The planets in their star system (there are several, Rigel-1 is the throne world) do consist of a mostly salt based composition, and so they’ve evolved to subsist on a primarily salt based diet. But, as you might have noticed, the Riigellian population is very much out of control. So they’ve been forced to colonize other places. Thus, the Rigellian empire.
