So today’s comic is inspired by an internet hoax that occurred this week. Someone posted a picture to Facebook of the time machine panel from Back to the Future showing that Wednesday was the day Doc Brown and Marty traveled to in the movie Back to the Future 2. It took about 2 seconds for the image to go viral and soon approximately a gazillion people were reforwarding the image. The problem is that Wednesday isn’t the day of the Future. As can clearly be seen in the second image here, the Future doesn’t occur til October 21st (or 26th, depending on which part of the movie you’re watching), 2015. The first image was doctored.
I of course knew this immediately. For one, I’m really smart. Like crazy smart. Like one day the rest of the universe will bow down to my genius and you will worship me as a god (feel free to start any time now… c’mon kids, be ahead of the curve!) Second, this exact hoax happened already a couple years back. It’s just that the denizens of the internet, despite being nerds and geeks are really just not all that bright, so they don’t remember what they had for breakfast this morning, let alone a hoax from a couple years ago. Third, as an artist and photographer, I have a keen eye for photoshop, I’m far more observant than mere mortals. This is another one of the reasons you’ll be worshipping me as a god some day. Finally, I spent all of last year writing a big huge time travel epic (Da Kitty Code, available for order on our Hellcat Bookstore page) in this very comic.
I was so annoyed by the posting that mere seconds after it started spreading, I announced that it was a hoax on twitter:
Dear internet:Its not BackToTheFuture day. Uts PhotoshopHoaxDay. The future is 10/21/15. You’re sposed to be geeks, dammit! Watch the movie!

Yes, there is a typo in it. Gods among men sometimes fat finger their typing on their iPhones, ok? So sue me! The point is, it was a hoax, I knew it was a hoax immediately. I tried to warn the internet and stop people from being embarrassed. But because you people DON’T yet worship me as a god, a lot of you missed it. Including several friends of mine. One of those friends was Dawn Griffin(@dgriff13) of the wonderful comic Zorphbert and Fred. Dawn, not only reposted the image, but she reposted a further doctored one that she had seen a full day later, after even people less godlike than me were talking about it being a hoax. And Dawn even follows me on twitter, so she totally should have known better. Oh well.
On a good note, Dawn’s posting in particular gave me the idea for today’s comic. See, while that wasn’t the specific day of The Future, it does call into point some of the other amazing things about the Back to the Future Trilogy. See, while they don’t time travel to 2012, they do make several predictions in the “vintage” that newspaper that shows Biff becoming rich. And believe it or not, that paper was dated yesterday! And it has details that are uncannily accurate. Unbelievable, isn’t it? It’s almost as if I photoshopped it up myself.
So the lesson here is that you should all follow both @cosmichellcats and my personal account, @chrismaverick, on twitter and check in with me before you post anything ever to the internet, because I will save you any undo embarrassment. And in payment, I expect nothing but your life long worship and devotion. You can show me this devotion by sending me regularly offerings of tithes and virgins. And in return, I will not smite you…. much.
