When the entire team was imprisoned by a group of Rigellians on the desolate planet U’ta, Sarah reprogrammed a Rigellian battledroid and used it to help the team escape. Renaming him Andrew, they welcomed him aboard the crew. Like all battledroids, Andrew lacks voice capability. However, unlike the others, he has developed an extensive emotional and moral compass due to both his reprogramming and his time with the Hellcats. He is completely loyal and devoted to the team, even though he often feels neglected and overlooked by them. He has become particularly fond of Damsel and somewhat antagonistic to Fluffy.
Fluffy is the Artificial Intelligence that controls the shipboard computer of the FSS-CH9. Like all felinoid smartships, the neural network that forms his AI is sentient and capable of independent thought, learning and emotion. This design is intended to make the smartship feel a kinship with the team by causing it to consider itself a member of the team. However, while most smartships become attached and protective of their crew, the constant danger that the CH-9 tends to face through the team’s relative inexperience and general recklessness has caused Fluffy to treat them with some amount of disdain. In particular, he is rather antagonistic of Damsel and Sarah, whom (as pilot and engineer) he blames for the majority of his perils, and Andrew, whom he considers to be an inferior artificial intelligence.
You know what you guys could use? Transition boxes. “Meanwhile, back on the Cosmic Hellcats’ ship…” That sort of thing. A lot of the backgrounds look the same, and it’s a long time between episodes. Also, I had to read this one twice because I forgot the ship could talk, and I thought the robot (what’s the robot’s name again?) was talking. Maybe you could give the ship’s dialog balloons some indicator that they are coming from somewhere…

Wow, hot multi-comment action! Mav, fwiw, the first time I posted my comment above it took me to some weird page that looked like one of those “this page is parked” kind of deals. I don’t know if the server was being restarted right in the middle of a POST, or what…
I’ve considered the “Meanwhile” boxes before. I’ve got very mixed feelings on them and not sure which way to go. For now I’ve been keeping them off, but I could be convinced to go the other way. Really the problem is that sometimes they’re distracting, especially with rapid transitions (which we don’t really do, except for when we’re going to Andrew and Fluffy, who we kinda use as transitional strips, at least for now). That’s why modern comics don’t really use them anymore. That said, I sometimes worry about exactly what you’re talking about.
The robot’s name is Andrew. I really need to get bios for all the supporting characters posted sooner or later.
Fluffy doesn’t really “talk.” He projects digital screens as holograms. Sometimes I use that to effect, but it hasn’t been all that obvious in these strips with Andrew.
Yeah, there’s a lot going on.
As for the multi-post, it’s a server bug we have between the admin interface for Movable Type and our web host. I haven’t been able to narrow it down yet, but this is the first I’ve heard of it happening on a comment post. That’s disturbing. *sigh*
I hate you so much, Mav.
why? I’m not the one who was mean. It was Fluffy.
