A little research says ‘swash’ is an archaic sound for a sword striking a shield, and ‘buckler’ is archaic for blocking (like the shield of the same name). So ‘swashbuckling’ probably originally had something to to with the noise made while blocking sword strikes.

Oh, he’d never do that. He’d be the guy who’d take an extra hour to open the airlock because he’s following every minute detail of the status checks. That’s probably why they were late getting to the fight in the first place.
